The Blue Eye: A Spring Nobody Has Reached the Bottom Of

A karst spring in southern Albania where the water comes out of the rock at an unknown depth and an impossible colour, half an hour from the coast.

Half an hour inland from the southern Albanian coast, water comes out of the ground at a colour that photographs badly because nobody believes it. The Blue Eye is a karst spring: rain that fell on the mountains works down through limestone and rises here through a vertical shaft, cold, clear and under pressure, feeding a river that runs away through the trees. Divers have gone down a long way without reaching the bottom, which is the fact everybody repeats and which is genuinely true.

The short version

Go mid morning on a sunny day, because the colour depends entirely on direct light and an overcast visit is a dark pool in a wood. Allow half an hour to an hour rather than a half day. Fit it into the drive between the coast and Gjirokaster instead of making a separate trip out of it, and keep it flexible so you can swap it for Butrint if you wake up to cloud. Check the current swimming rules on site, and expect the water to be very cold whatever the month.

This is a stop, so make sure the day it is stopping on is a good one

The Blue Eye takes half an hour and sits almost exactly halfway between the southern coast and Gjirokaster, which tells you how to use it: not as a destination but as the reason the drive inland is worth taking slowly. With a car that day becomes Saranda to the spring, up to Gjirokaster for the afternoon and the stone bazaar, and back over the pass in the evening light, or onward north. Without one, the organised trips from Saranda cover the same ground for very little and remove the parking and the turnoff. Either works. What does not work is a taxi out and back for a single spring, which is the most expensive way to see a small pool of water in Europe.

When is the best time to visit the Blue Eye?

Mid morning on a sunny day, when the light reaches into the shaft and the colour is at its most intense, and outside the middle of the day in July and August when the coach groups arrive. Spring has the highest water flow. The colour is much less dramatic under cloud, which is worth knowing before driving out.
